Filter Cartridge Viscosity Correction: Read Flow Curves Correctly
A filter cartridge flow curve is only useful when its test conditions match your application—or when the supplier provides a valid correction. A water-based curve should not be treated as a guaranteed flow rating for oil, syrup, coating or another viscous process liquid.
When comparing INCEFILTER liquid filter cartridges, request the curve for the exact grade, length and construction being quoted. The objective is to estimate clean pressure loss at the required flow while leaving a practical allowance for loading during service.
Start with the curve’s reference conditions
Check whether the graph represents one element, several elements or a complete assembly. Record the reference fluid, temperature, viscosity, cartridge length, filtration grade and pressure units. Confirm whether the curve includes the housing. Curves for different grades or lengths are not interchangeable simply because the outer cartridge diameter matches.
Separate a viscosity estimate from a design guarantee
Some manufacturers allow a viscosity-based correction for specified clean liquid filter elements. Where the supplier confirms that pressure loss is proportional to dynamic viscosity under the applicable conditions, the estimate takes this form:
Estimated clean element pressure loss = reference pressure loss × operating dynamic viscosity ÷ reference dynamic viscosity.
For illustration only, a reference element loss of 0.10 bar at 1 mPa·s would become 0.40 bar at 4 mPa·s at the same flow under that assumption. These are hypothetical values, not INCEFILTER performance data. Do not apply the calculation to a complete assembly unless its supplier explicitly permits it.
Dynamic viscosity in mPa·s has the same numerical value as cP. A value reported in cSt is kinematic viscosity and cannot be inserted directly in that ratio without the appropriate density conversion. Give the supplier the original laboratory result, units and measurement temperature.
Include the operating cases that matter
| Operating case | Information to provide | Question for the supplier |
|---|---|---|
| Normal production | Flow, temperature and viscosity | What is the predicted clean assembly loss? |
| Cold startup | Lowest starting temperature and viscosity at that condition | Can the required startup flow remain within limits? |
| Cleaning or product change | Fluid chemistry, concentration and temperature | Are all wetted components suitable? |
| Non-Newtonian liquid | Viscosity versus shear conditions or relevant test data | Is a simple correction valid, or is a trial needed? |
Keep housing loss and change-out limits separate
The element, housing and connecting pipework all contribute to system pressure loss. Their contributions need not respond identically to viscosity. Ask for the complete assembly assessment and the applicable element differential-pressure limit at operating temperature. A clean-flow estimate does not predict dirt-holding capacity, service life or final filtrate quality.
Use the differential pressure log to record actual flow and temperature alongside pressure readings during an agreed trial. For high flow cartridges, also confirm the housing interface and permitted flow direction.
Request a documented selection
Send INCEFILTER your liquid and duty data, including the required filtrate quality, flow range, viscosity with units and temperature, housing details and available pressure budget. Ask for the proposed cartridge, calculation assumptions and any sample-trial requirements in the quotation.
