Filter Cartridge Efficiency Reports: Compare Beta Ratios
A micron label alone is not enough to compare two liquid filter cartridges. A useful filter cartridge efficiency report identifies the particle size, removal efficiency and conditions under which the result was measured. Before approving a purchase, ask whether the evidence describes the exact cartridge being quoted.
This guide helps purchasing and engineering teams review particulate-retention data for INCEFILTER liquid filter cartridges. It does not assign an unverified efficiency rating to a product.
Start with a complete performance statement
Instead of recording only “5 micron,” create a comparison row containing the product code, particle-size threshold, removal efficiency, test method and report reference. Keep cartridge dimensions and construction alongside that row so a report for a different element is not accepted by mistake.
Terms such as nominal and absolute need the manufacturer’s definition. Ask for the actual retention evidence rather than assuming that either word has one universal percentage. Also distinguish particle retention from microbiological validation: a particle-count result alone does not establish sterilizing performance.
Read the beta ratio at the stated particle size
For matched particle-count measurements at a specified size threshold x, the beta ratio is the upstream concentration divided by the downstream concentration. Removal efficiency is calculated from that ratio:
Beta x = upstream particle concentration / downstream particle concentration
Efficiency (%) = (1 − 1 / Beta x) × 100
Use concentrations based on comparable sample volumes and the same counting threshold. Do not divide unmatched raw counts from different sample volumes.
| Illustrative beta ratio at x | Calculated removal efficiency |
|---|---|
| 20 | 95% |
| 200 | 99.5% |
| 1,000 | 99.9% |
| 5,000 | 99.98% |
These are mathematical examples, not INCEFILTER product ratings. Beta 200 at one particle size cannot be ranked against Beta 1,000 at a different size without additional data.
Check whether two reports are comparable
| Report item | Question for the supplier |
|---|---|
| Element identity | Does the report cover the quoted media, grade, length and construction? |
| Challenge material | What particles were used, and how was particle size measured? |
| Test liquid and temperature | What conditions were used, and how do they differ from our process? |
| Flow and loading | What flow, contaminant loading and pressure conditions applied? |
| Test procedure | Was this single-pass or multi-pass testing, and which procedure or revision was followed? |
| Reported result | Is this an initial result, an average, or performance assessed through a loading sequence? |
Request clarification where a summary sheet omits these items. A report need not use your process liquid to be informative, but the differences should remain visible when engineering approves the selection.
Keep retention, capacity and fit as separate checks
Higher measured retention does not by itself prove longer service life. Dirt-holding capacity comparisons also depend on the challenge, operating conditions and test endpoint. Keep the efficiency review separate from the operating trial and the mechanical fit review.
For a large-format element, use the high flow cartridge compatibility checklist to confirm dimensions and sealing interfaces. During a controlled process evaluation, a differential pressure log helps document operating conditions; it does not replace downstream quality measurements.
Put the evidence requirement into the purchase enquiry
A practical enquiry can state: “Please identify the proposed cartridge code and supply available particulate-retention data, the particle-size threshold, efficiency or beta ratio, test conditions and report reference. Identify any difference between the tested element and the quoted configuration.”
Record the review outcome as accepted, clarification required, or application trial required. Keep unanswered questions with the quotation rather than converting them into assumed product specifications.
Request a cartridge quotation from INCEFILTER
Send INCEFILTER your cartridge enquiry with the liquid, temperature, flow requirement, target contaminant, housing details and required downstream quality. Include the retention evidence you need so the proposed product and available documentation can be reviewed together.
