Filter Housing Hold-Up Volume: Compare Batch Recovery

Before comparing filter housing hold-up volumes, ask what was measured, which filter was installed and how liquid was recovered. A vessel’s internal capacity is not automatically the volume of product lost at each changeover. This distinction matters when buying equipment for small batches or valuable process liquids.

When reviewing INCEFILTER stainless steel filter housings, request model-specific information. A generic claim such as “low hold-up” is insufficient for a purchase acceptance limit.

Separate capacity, retained liquid and recoverable product

Quantity Question to resolve
Internal liquid capacity Does the stated volume include an installed filter and internal fittings?
Liquid remaining after recovery What procedure and endpoint define the measurement?
Usable recovered product Does recovered liquid meet the process quality requirement?
System loss Are connected pipes, sampling and transfer losses included?

Manufacturers use hold-up language in product-specific contexts. Pall, for example, identifies low hold-up as a way to minimize fluid loss in its laboratory test housing. That statement supports considering recovery during selection; it provides no retained-volume figure for an INCEFILTER unit.

Agree the comparison conditions

Ask the supplier to identify housing orientation, installed filter configuration, liquid properties, temperature, recovery method and measurement endpoint. A result obtained with water may not describe a viscous production liquid. A different cartridge or bag can also change the assembly being evaluated.

Keep the proposed recovery procedure within the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and the plant’s approved operating procedure. Do not improvise gas purging or open pressurized equipment to improve recovery. This article is a purchasing checklist, not an operating procedure.

Use a batch balance with stated boundaries

For a controlled comparison, record input, accepted output, samples, separately recovered material and known transfer losses using a consistent mass or volume basis. An unexplained difference should not be assigned entirely to the filter housing. If density changes with temperature or composition, a volume-only comparison can be misleading.

Illustrative arithmetic: if two validated arrangements differ by 0.4 litres of unrecoverable product per batch, 50 comparable batches represent 20 litres of difference. These are hypothetical figures, not product performance. Convert to cost only using your actual product value, and assess quality, cleaning and operating costs alongside recovery.

Make the acceptance test part of the quotation

State whether the required limit applies to the bare housing, the complete filter assembly or the installed line. Identify the test liquid, procedure, measurement method and acceptance authority. Ask what supporting evidence is available and whether a representative trial is needed.

The vent and drain supply-scope guide helps clarify which ports and accessories are included. Their presence alone does not establish complete drainage or a recovery guarantee.

Send a batch-recovery enquiry

Request an INCEFILTER housing review with batch size, liquid and temperature, normal flow, required filtration result, preferred filter configuration, recovery objective, quantity and delivery destination. Include an installation sketch and distinguish a mandatory acceptance limit from an initial target. Request confirmation of the proposed model and evidence before ordering.
