Filter Mesh Incoming Inspection: A Buyer’s Checklist
A roll labelled with the correct micron size can still be unsuitable for your production process. Incoming inspection should compare the delivered mesh with an approved specification covering aperture, construction, dimensions, condition and traceability. Agree on that specification before purchase so a delivery can be accepted or held using evidence.
This checklist is intended for buyers of woven filter mesh and fabricated filtration components. It is a procurement workflow, not a claim that every mesh grade has the same tolerances or performance.
1. Define exactly what the micron value means
Ask whether the stated value is a geometric mesh opening or a particle-retention rating obtained under specified test conditions. These describe different things. For a woven mesh, record the opening in both fabric directions when relevant, the weave, yarn material and diameter, and the measurement method. Mesh count also needs a unit, such as threads per inch or per centimetre.
Mesh count alone does not fix the opening: different yarn diameters can produce different gaps at the same count. Likewise, two fabrics with the same opening can have different open areas and thicknesses. Sefar’s published fabric tables list opening, open area and thickness separately, illustrating why a buyer should request each parameter rather than rely on a micron label alone.
2. Create a receipt inspection sheet
| Check | Record | Acceptance basis |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and traceability | Supplier, purchase order, product code, roll or lot number | Labels and documents match the approved order |
| Construction | Polymer or metal grade, weave and finish | Approved datasheet and drawing revision |
| Aperture | Measured openings, directions, locations and method | Agreed tolerances and sampling plan |
| Dimensions | Usable width, supplied length or cut-part dimensions | Order dimensions and defined edge exclusions |
| Surface and edges | Holes, broken yarns, contamination, creases or cutting defects | Agreed defect definitions and permitted limits |
| Documentation | Required inspection report and application-specific declarations | Documents identify the supplied material and intended scope |
Do not invent a universal acceptance tolerance. The permitted variation depends on the fabric, measurement method and application. Establish the number and location of samples, the definition of a defect, and the rules for holding or rejecting a delivery in the purchase agreement.
3. Measure without changing the sample
Use suitable calibrated optical equipment and a documented preparation method for aperture checks. Define whether the fabric is measured relaxed or under a specified tension, and use the same condition as the agreed specification. Avoid stretching a flexible mesh simply to flatten it for inspection.
Measure several agreed locations across the usable width and along the supplied material. Keep the individual results and their positions rather than recording only one convenient average. A central sample cannot establish that the edges or the entire roll are free from defects. Photograph observations with a scale and retain the lot identity.
For converted parts, check the finished component as well as the original cloth. Cutting, welding, seams and attachment features may affect usable filtration area and fit. Acceptance of a fabric sample does not automatically approve every finished bag, disc or insert made from it.
4. Use open-area calculations as a consistency check
For an ideal square-opening weave with the same yarn diameter in both directions, the geometric open-area estimate is:
Open area (%) = [opening / (opening + yarn diameter)]² × 100.
For example, an illustrative opening of 100 micrometres and yarn diameter of 50 micrometres gives about 44.4% geometric open area. This is a calculation example, not an INCEFILTER product specification. Different weaves, non-square openings, deformation and finishing require an appropriate method.
A calculated value is useful for flagging inconsistent paperwork. It does not certify particle retention, mechanical strength or liquid throughput. If a supplier’s table and drawing disagree, request a corrected, approved specification for the exact product code before accepting the shipment.
5. Keep material checks separate from process qualification
A mesh can pass dimensional inspection yet fail in the intended liquid. Confirm the complete fluid composition, concentration, operating temperature, cleaning conditions and mechanical support before selection. For food-contact or other controlled applications, specify the exact documentation required; the words “nylon,” “polyester” or “stainless steel” alone do not establish compliance.
If process performance is critical, run an agreed sample trial using representative liquid and operating conditions. Define the required filtrate quality, acceptable pressure drop, throughput and observation period. Visual appearance and aperture measurements alone cannot replace that application test.
6. Make the release decision traceable
Record one of three outcomes: released, held for clarification, or rejected under the agreed purchase conditions. Identify the affected lots, observed discrepancy and evidence. Keep held material separate so it cannot be used accidentally. Any concession should identify who approved it and the particular order or application it covers.
Prepare a mesh quotation request
Send INCEFILTER the aperture and measurement basis, material, weave, yarn details if known, usable width or finished drawing, quantity, fluid and temperature, and required inspection documents. Include an approved sample or photograph where available.
Browse our nylon filter mesh and polyester filter mesh ranges, then request a quotation with your inspection requirements. Ask for the product-specific datasheet and agreed acceptance criteria before confirming the order.
