Filter Housing Seal Selection: Build a Service Data Sheet
A filter housing seal should be selected for the complete service environment and its approved groove geometry. Specifying only “EPDM,” “FKM” or a seal diameter leaves important purchasing questions unanswered. A seal can fit physically while remaining unsuitable for the liquid, cleaning cycle or operating conditions.
This guide helps buyers prepare the information needed for a replacement-seal review on a stainless steel filter housing. It is a data-gathering workflow, not a compatibility approval for a particular elastomer.
Identify the seal’s job and location
Start with the housing manufacturer, model, serial number and drawing revision. Identify whether the item seals the lid, a cartridge connection, a drain or another joint. These positions may require different designs and materials even within one housing.
Use the original part number or approved drawing wherever possible. A photograph helps identify the location, but it does not establish the material compound or all dimensions. A used seal may have changed shape in service, so measuring it alone is an unreliable basis for reproducing the original part.
Describe every fluid the seal encounters
Prepare a service data sheet rather than a one-line description such as “water” or “chemical liquid.” Include the process mixture and any cleaning, rinsing or sanitizing stage. A proposed seal must be reviewed against each relevant exposure.
| Data field | Information to provide |
|---|---|
| Process liquid | Chemical names, mixture composition, concentrations and relevant impurities |
| Temperature | Normal, minimum and maximum temperatures, with exposure duration |
| Cleaning cycle | Cleaning agents, concentrations, temperatures, contact time and frequency |
| Pressure conditions | Normal and maximum operating pressure, cycling and any vacuum exposure |
| Seal geometry | Approved part number, profile, dimensions, tolerances and mating-groove details |
| Application requirements | Required material declarations, traceability and applicable customer specifications |
| Service history | Replacement interval and photographs or observations of safely removed seals |
If composition is confidential, agree on an appropriate way to share the necessary technical information. Do not replace a missing concentration or temperature with a guess. Mark it as unresolved so the supplier knows that the review is incomplete.
Ask for compound-level evidence
A polymer family is a starting point, not a complete specification. Parker’s material offering guide distinguishes individual compounds, hardness values and recommended uses within its product range. The lesson for procurement is to request the proposed compound identification and supporting documentation, rather than assuming all seals carrying the same polymer abbreviation are interchangeable.
Ask the housing or seal supplier to confirm suitability for the stated service conditions and geometry. A general compatibility chart can help screen candidates, but it does not replace review of the actual compound and application. Resolve uncertainties through the supplier’s recommended qualification process before bulk purchasing.
Do not copy a temperature range from a different seal supplier or treat a polymer name as proof of food-contact suitability. Obtain the required documentation for the actual material and intended use. This article makes no certification claim for an INCEFILTER seal.
Keep geometry and material approval together
Record the profile, dimensions and hardness specified by the equipment manufacturer. A different cross-section or hardness can change how a seal behaves in the groove. Do not assume that a flat gasket, solid O-ring and encapsulated seal can replace one another because their outside diameters appear similar.
Inspect the sealing surfaces and closure components under the maintenance procedure. Replacing the elastomer alone will not resolve every damaged-groove or closure problem. Avoid unapproved machining, improvised packing or extra tightening to make an incorrect seal fit.
Document the approval and first installation
Before ordering, obtain a written specification connecting the housing model, seal location, compound, dimensions and service conditions. Record the accepted revision and any restrictions. Keep the trial or initial delivery batch traceable so later repeat orders refer to the same approved item.
Qualified maintenance personnel should install and check the seal using the housing manual, approved lubricant if required, and site isolation procedure. Verify depressurization before opening. Record the installation and inspection outcome; a leak-free startup alone does not establish long-term chemical suitability.
Request a housing-specific review
For an INCEFILTER inquiry, send the service data sheet, housing identification, drawing and seal-location photographs. Browse the filter housing range, then request confirmation of the proposed seal and housing configuration. Availability and suitability should be confirmed for the specific model before purchase.
