High Flow Cartridge Flow Direction: Verify the Whole Path
High flow cartridge flow direction must be verified for the exact element and housing combination. “Inside to outside” describes flow across the cartridge media; an inlet arrow on the vessel describes entry into the housing. These two descriptions need to agree through the internal flow path.
When selecting from the INCEFILTER high flow cartridge range, request written confirmation of the permitted direction for the proposed product. Similar dimensions, end caps or handles are not enough to establish the correct direction.
Trace the liquid through three documents
| Document | Check | Required result |
|---|---|---|
| Cartridge datasheet | Normal flow direction and any separately stated reverse-pressure limits | The selected element is approved for the intended service |
| Housing assembly drawing | Inlet chamber, cartridge connection, seals and outlet chamber | The liquid crosses the media in the approved direction |
| Plant piping drawing | Actual inlet/outlet connections and possible alternate flow paths | The installed arrangement agrees with the housing drawing |
Mark each step on a copy of the approved drawing: incoming liquid, upstream side of the media, downstream side and outlet. If the path cannot be traced from the available documents, resolve the missing information before releasing the replacement order.
A product example is not a universal rule
Pall describes its referenced Ultipleat High Flow system as using an inside-to-outside flow pattern. This is evidence for that identified system. It should not be generalized to every large-diameter cartridge or used to certify an alternative cartridge’s compatibility.
Likewise, an approved normal-direction differential-pressure limit is not automatically a reverse-direction rating. Ask the supplier whether reverse flow is allowed and under what documented conditions. Do not reverse a disposable cartridge to clean it unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that procedure for the exact element.
Include shutdown and cleaning arrangements in the enquiry
The purchasing review should identify operating modes beyond steady production. Tell the equipment engineer and supplier about cleaning loops, alternate pump paths, elevated downstream equipment and any reported pressure reversal. Request confirmation that the proposed cartridge and housing arrangement is suitable for these modes.
This review is not a valve-operating procedure. Follow the equipment manual and site instructions for isolation, filling, venting and restart. Do not change piping or valve settings simply to test an uncertain flow direction.
Check the evidence during a controlled trial
Before the trial, confirm the cartridge code, housing reference, drawing revision and installation record. At the agreed operating point, record flow, temperature, inlet pressure, outlet pressure and outlet-quality measurements. Use the differential pressure log to keep these conditions together.
An unexpected reading does not identify its cause by itself. Verify the instrument locations, pressure connections and operating state before attributing the result to the cartridge. A filter that physically fits or shows low pressure loss has not necessarily passed a retention-performance assessment.
What to send to INCEFILTER
Request a flow-path review with your replacement enquiry. Include the existing and proposed part numbers, element datasheets, housing cross-section, inlet/outlet photographs and operating modes. Add the liquid, temperature, flow and filtration requirement.
For the wider purchasing review, use the high flow cartridge compatibility checklist. Record unresolved differences explicitly rather than treating a generic replacement description as approval.
