Filter Cartridge Failure Analysis: Prepare an Evidence Pack
When a filter cartridge gives an unexpectedly short run, loses flow or fails an outlet-quality check, a useful investigation starts with evidence. A used cartridge alone rarely explains what happened. Preserve its identity and connect it to the operating history before requesting a technical review.
This guide provides a proposed enquiry workflow for INCEFILTER liquid filter cartridges. It does not promise a laboratory service, acceptance of contaminated returns or a particular failure-analysis result. Agree the investigation scope with the receiving supplier or laboratory first.
Define the symptom precisely
Write down what changed, when it changed and how it was measured. Separate low flow, rising differential pressure, visible mechanical damage and unacceptable filtrate quality. “The filter failed” is too broad to determine which records or examinations will help.
For example, “outlet particle count exceeded our agreed limit after a product change” gives a clearer starting point than “poor filtration.” Attach the actual results and method, including the sampling location. Do not infer particle retention from liquid appearance alone.
Build a compact evidence pack
| Record | Information to include |
|---|---|
| Product identity | Full cartridge code, lot or serial reference, quantity and purchase-order line |
| Equipment | Housing model, number of elements, assembly drawing and installation date |
| Process history | Liquid composition, temperatures, flow and relevant production or cleaning changes |
| Pressure record | Inlet and outlet readings, instrument locations and the conditions at each reading |
| Quality evidence | Inlet/outlet results, sample times, test method and acceptance limit |
| Observations | Photographs of labels, seals, both ends and damage before further handling |
Use the pressure log to distinguish a loading trend from an isolated reading. Include the clean baseline where available. If flow or temperature changed, flag that difference instead of comparing pressure values as though the conditions were identical.
Preserve identity and record any treatment
Follow the equipment manual and site isolation and handling procedures when removing an element. Give each retained item a reference linked to its position and operating record. Keep multiple elements distinguishable; mixing them removes information that may be useful later.
Before washing, cutting, drying or otherwise treating a retained element, ask the receiving specialist what examination is proposed and what preparation is acceptable. Required safety treatment takes priority, and every treatment should be documented because it may change deposits or other evidence. Do not keep hazardous material in unsafe conditions merely to preserve a sample.
Arrange acceptance before shipping
Supply the process-fluid identity and relevant safety information to the intended recipient. Obtain confirmation of acceptance, preparation, packaging and transport requirements before dispatch. A general contact address is not authorization to send a contaminated filter.
Pall’s post-use testing questionnaire illustrates the importance of product identification, protective packaging and hazard information in a defined return process. Its service and instructions apply to that program; they are not an INCEFILTER return policy or a universal shipping procedure.
Agree the question the review should answer
Ask whether the review is intended to assess mechanical condition, investigate retained contamination, compare operating records or perform a product-specific test. These are different tasks. No single photograph proves a manufacturing defect, chemical attack or an incorrect selection.
Also distinguish a particulate cartridge review from a validated membrane integrity test. Any test method and acceptance value must be appropriate to the identified product and agreed with the competent specialist.
Start with a technical enquiry
Send INCEFILTER the evidence pack and your investigation question before shipping a sample or ordering a replacement. If a revised specification is proposed, request its technical basis and define a controlled trial with acceptance criteria. For efficiency comparisons, consult the filter cartridge efficiency report guide.
