Parallel High Flow Filters: Verify Flow Sharing Before Sizing
Dividing total flow by the number of parallel filter housings gives an average, not proof that every branch receives that flow. Before buying high flow cartridges for a parallel installation, ask the system designer to verify the flow distribution and the duty of each operating branch.
This guide concerns separate parallel housings connected by manifolds. It does not provide a universal model for distribution among elements inside one housing. Use the housing manufacturer’s information for that internal arrangement.
Why equal division needs verification
Flow through each branch depends on the hydraulic resistance of its complete path. Pipe lengths, fittings, valves, housing losses and filter condition all matter. Two housings with the same label can therefore operate under different conditions when connected to different branch piping.
Grundfos explains that system pressure loss includes pipe sections and individual resistive components. Applying that principle to filter branches means the cartridge should not be assessed in isolation. The system designer must account for the actual arrangement; the reference is not a sizing certification for an INCEFILTER system.
Define the operating cases
| Case | Information required |
|---|---|
| Normal operation | Total flow and expected flow through each active branch |
| Peak demand | Peak flow, duration and permitted pressure loss |
| One branch unavailable | Required production flow and remaining branch duty |
| Different loading states | How unequal filter resistance is assessed and monitored |
For illustration, 90 m³/h across three branches averages 30 m³/h per branch. If only two remain active and the same total flow is required, the average becomes 45 m³/h. Neither calculation proves equal sharing or acceptable performance. These figures are hypothetical, not ratings for any cartridge or housing.
Specify what the supplier needs to check
Provide a piping sketch showing common headers, branch dimensions, valves, instrument positions and flow direction. Include liquid composition, temperature, viscosity where relevant, normal and peak flow, and the required filtration result. Identify the housing and cartridge configuration rather than supplying only a nominal micron rating.
Review INCEFILTER high flow filter cartridge options together with the flow-duty quotation guide. Request the relevant flow-versus-pressure-loss information for the proposed configuration and its stated test conditions.
Plan measurement before approving the installation
A total flow reading alone cannot reveal each branch flow. Ask the designer which measurements are needed to establish distribution and detect changing resistance. Distinguish differential pressure across an individual housing from pressure loss across the entire manifold arrangement.
Use a consistent differential-pressure record with instrument locations and operating conditions. Do not infer remaining cartridge life from a single pressure reading or adjust valves without an approved system procedure.
Request a configuration-specific quotation
Send INCEFILTER a parallel-filter enquiry with the piping sketch, housing identification, number of active and standby branches, operating cases, liquid conditions, cartridge quantity and destination. Ask the quotation to state the proposed cartridge specification and the duty assumptions used. Hydraulic design and commissioning responsibilities should be agreed separately before purchase.
