Filter Cartridge Turbidity Results: What NTU Can Tell You
A lower downstream turbidity reading can support a water-clarity objective, but it does not by itself prove a cartridge’s micron rating or particle-removal efficiency. Before choosing a replacement filter, connect each trial result to the purchasing requirement it actually measures.
When reviewing INCEFILTER liquid filter cartridges, state whether your acceptance criterion concerns turbidity, suspended-solids concentration or particle counts at defined sizes. These questions require different evidence.
Three measurements, three different questions
Turbidity is an optical response to scattered light. Particle size, shape and colour can affect it; NTU or FNU reporting depends on the measurement method. Total suspended solids (TSS) is a mass concentration, commonly determined by collecting, drying and weighing residue from a known sample volume. There is no universal turbidity-to-TSS conversion. A local correlation requires paired measurements for the relevant water.
Particle counting addresses particle numbers in specified size ranges, within the instrument’s capabilities. A single turbidity value does not supply that size distribution. Consequently, do not convert an NTU reading directly into a micron rating.
Read a trial claim carefully
Consider a hypothetical trial summary: “The inlet was 10 NTU and the outlet was 2 NTU.” The numerical decrease is 80% of the inlet reading. It is reasonable to describe that arithmetic as an 80% reduction in the measured turbidity under the recorded conditions. It is not evidence that 80% of particles of every size were removed.
The next purchasing question is whether the outlet met the agreed turbidity criterion throughout the required operating period. A single favourable pair of samples cannot establish service life, maximum throughput or performance under a different feed condition. This example is not an INCEFILTER test result or product guarantee.
Write an acceptance statement before the trial
A useful statement identifies the measurement, method, sampling location, operating window and decision rule. For example: “Assess outlet turbidity using the agreed instrument and procedure during the specified production run; record feed conditions and all results against the buyer’s acceptance limit.” Insert an application-specific limit agreed by the responsible process team. Do not copy an unrelated industry’s threshold.
Keep the cartridge identity, flow, liquid temperature, inlet conditions, differential pressure and elapsed operating time with the result sheet. Use the cartridge sampling-plan guide to define when and where samples are collected. Record the instrument and method so that a later supplier comparison can use a consistent basis.
Choose the next test from the unanswered question
- “Is the outlet sufficiently clear?” Review the agreed turbidity results across the operating window.
- “How much suspended solid mass remains?” Obtain the appropriate TSS analysis rather than applying a generic NTU conversion.
- “What fraction of particles at a stated size passes through?” Request relevant upstream and downstream particle-count evidence and the test conditions. The filter efficiency and beta-ratio guide explains how to read that separate claim.
If two candidates meet the same quality requirement, compare their recorded operating conditions and replacement criteria before drawing a cost conclusion. Neither visual clarity nor turbidity alone establishes suitability for every downstream process.
Ask INCEFILTER to review your cartridge application. Include the liquid, required output measurement, existing cartridge identification, operating conditions and available trial report. State which performance evidence is still needed before purchase.
