Filter Mesh Roll Width: Plan Cutting Yield Before Ordering
The lowest price per metre of filter mesh does not always give the lowest material cost per usable part. Before ordering a roll, calculate how many approved blanks fit across its usable width and along its usable length. Edge exclusions, cutting gaps and the permitted fabric orientation can change the result.
INCEFILTER lists filter mesh products and roll and fabricated mesh options. Confirm the available width and manufacturing tolerances for the exact material and mesh specification in your enquiry.
Use usable width, not just the catalogue width
Ask the supplier to distinguish overall roll width from the width available for your parts after agreed edge exclusions. Confirm whether the stated tolerance applies to the overall width, the usable width or both. Do the same for length: packaging length is not automatically a guarantee of uninterrupted usable material.
Record the mesh specification separately. A wider roll is not an equivalent substitute if its material, opening, weave or thread diameter differs from the approved requirement.
Define the blank that will actually be cut
- Blank width and length: include any allowances needed for the later sewing, welding, folding or clamping operation.
- Cutting gap: allow the separation required by the agreed cutting process.
- Orientation: specify which blank direction follows the roll length, and whether rotating the layout is allowed.
- Edge condition: identify whether the drawing requires a particular edge treatment.
- Exclusions: agree how defects, joins and damaged areas are identified and handled.
Cutting method and edge requirements should be confirmed before calculating yield. Sefar’s technical information describes several mesh-converting methods, including heat and ultrasonic cutting; it does not mean every method is suitable or available for every INCEFILTER mesh.
Calculate a simple rectangular layout
For a straight grid of identical rectangular blanks, let W and L be usable roll width and length, w and l be blank width and length, and g and h be the gaps between adjacent blanks across and along the roll.
Blanks per row = floor((W + g) / (w + g))
Number of rows = floor((L + h) / (l + h))
Planned blanks = blanks per row × number of rows
“Floor” means round down to a whole number. The added gap in each numerator reflects that there is no inter-part gap after the last blank. All dimensions must use the same unit. Any required outer margins must already be excluded from W and L.
Worked example: why a small width difference matters
This example uses assumed planning dimensions, not an offered product size. Suppose usable width is 1,000 mm and usable length is 10,000 mm. Each blank is 240 × 390 mm, with a 5 mm gap in both directions.
- Across the roll: floor(1,005 / 245) = 4 blanks.
- Along the roll: floor(10,005 / 395) = 25 rows.
- Planned total: 4 × 25 = 100 blanks before quality rejects or other unplanned losses.
If usable width were only 970 mm, the same layout would fit three blanks across: floor(975 / 245) = 3. The planned total would fall to 75. Four blanks require 975 mm including the three internal gaps, so a nominal 1,000 mm roll is not enough information unless usable width is confirmed.
Rotating the blanks can change the count, but use that option only if the drawing and process permit it. Circles, irregular parts and mixed sizes need a separate nesting layout; this rectangular formula is not a nesting optimizer.
Compare quotations per accepted blank
Divide the quoted material cost by the expected accepted blank quantity, then show cutting cost and any expected rejects separately. Keep the assumed rejection allowance visible and update it from a representative cutting trial. Do not present theoretical yield as a guaranteed production result.
Use the filter mesh incoming inspection checklist to connect the order specification to receiving checks. For finished discs, the custom mesh disc drawing checklist addresses the part definition rather than roll-layout arithmetic.
Send a clear roll-mesh enquiry
Contact INCEFILTER with the material, opening requirement, usable width needed, quantity, blank drawing, permitted orientation, cutting process and packaging requirements. Ask for the available roll options and tolerances before finalizing the layout. This makes roll supply and finished-part quotations easier to compare on the same basis.
