Filter Cartridge Sampling Plans: Verify Trial Results
Before comparing two filter cartridges, agree how the trial samples will be taken and judged. An outlet sample may describe the liquid in that bottle without proving how the cartridge performed throughout the run. A written sampling plan connects the purchase decision to defined operating conditions and an agreed quality requirement.
Use this checklist when discussing INCEFILTER liquid filter cartridges. It is a framework for a buyer and the responsible laboratory to complete together, not a universal sampling procedure or a guarantee of a particular filtration result.
Start with the decision the test must support
Separate two questions: does the filtered liquid meet the process requirement, and how does the cartridge change the incoming contamination? The first requires an appropriate outlet acceptance test. The second also needs representative inlet information. A clean outlet alone does not establish removal efficiency if the incoming liquid was already clean.
Define the reported property and units before ordering samples. Particle count, retained solids mass and a visual assessment answer different questions; they should not be substituted for each other without an agreed technical basis. Ask the laboratory to identify the method, measurement range and reporting limits.
Map the sample points to the process
Mark the proposed inlet and outlet locations on a simple process sketch. Identify any storage tank, dosing point, bypass, return line or downstream component between them. Otherwise, a result attributed to the filter could include changes elsewhere in the system.
The equipment owner should approve safe, suitable sampling arrangements. Do not loosen a housing connection or improvise a sample outlet on a pressurized system. Where residence time separates the inlet and outlet, ask the process engineer how paired samples should represent comparable process conditions.
Build a record that the laboratory can use
| Plan item | Record before the trial |
|---|---|
| Sample identity | Point, date, time, cartridge code and trial run reference |
| Operating state | Flow, temperature, differential pressure and process phase |
| Collection method | Approved container, preparation, handling and transfer procedure |
| Test method | Measured property, units, sample quantity and reporting limit |
| Acceptance rule | Who reviews the results and what constitutes an acceptable run |
| Exceptions | Changed feed, interrupted operation, damaged container or missing record |
Merck’s particle-monitoring guidance emphasizes consistent collection procedures, clean sampling equipment and sample quantities appropriate to the measurement. Ask the laboratory to define these details for your liquid. Do not copy a sample volume from another industry simply because the container is convenient.
Avoid drawing a conclusion from mismatched runs
Suppose cartridge A is tested early in a batch and cartridge B after a feed tank change. A different outlet result may reflect the changed feed as well as the cartridge. Record the change, compare the inlet evidence and decide whether another controlled run is needed.
Likewise, label start-up samples separately from samples collected during established operation. Agree in advance which process phases must meet the acceptance requirement. Do not discard an inconvenient result without documenting the reason.
Keep field evidence separate from a rated efficiency claim
A field trial can support suitability under the recorded conditions. It does not automatically reproduce a standardized laboratory efficiency test or establish a service-life guarantee. Use the efficiency-report review guide when comparing supplier ratings, and keep the trial’s pressure and operating log alongside its laboratory results.
Send INCEFILTER your cartridge requirement and proposed trial acceptance plan. Include the process liquid, existing housing, quality target and available inlet data so the enquiry identifies both the product and the evidence needed for approval.
