Filter Mesh Edge Finish: Approve the Cut Before Production
The mesh specification and the finished edge specification are different parts of a purchase order. Two cut pieces can use the same fabric and outside dimensions while behaving differently during handling or assembly. Define what the edge must do before approving the cutting process.
This guide supports enquiries for parts made from INCEFILTER filter mesh. Available cutting and finishing methods must be confirmed for the selected material, geometry and order. It does not promise that every method is available for every mesh.
Describe the edge’s function in the assembly
Mark whether the perimeter sits inside a clamped border, enters a molded component, joins another mesh section or remains exposed to the process liquid. Identify any edge that is handled repeatedly during installation. These details help the supplier propose a method with a clear acceptance target.
For an insert held in a frame, distinguish the outside dimension used for assembly from the open area actually available for filtration. Do not assume that every part of the cut blank is active filtration area.
Request a proposed method, then inspect its result
Sefar describes heat and ultrasonic slitting as methods used to produce sealed ribbon edges. This is evidence that edge treatment is a separate manufacturing consideration; it is not proof that a particular INCEFILTER mesh or part will produce the same result.
Ask the supplier to identify the proposed cutting method and any subsequent treatment. For a mechanical cut, discuss whether loose filaments could remain. For a process that fuses an edge, ask how the affected border is controlled. The finished sample, its drawing and the agreed inspection criteria should determine acceptance rather than the process name alone.
Put measurable requirements on the drawing
| Drawing item | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Finished dimensions | Dimensions after cutting and finishing, with agreed tolerances |
| Edge condition | Permitted loose ends, projections or other observable defects |
| Affected border | Maximum permitted edge-treatment region where relevant |
| Active filtration zone | The region that must remain open and unobstructed |
| Flatness and handling | Condition needed for feeding, positioning and assembly |
| Inspection method | Viewing conditions, measurement method and sample acceptance record |
Avoid an undefined requirement such as “perfect edge.” Instead, agree representative acceptable and unacceptable samples or photographs, together with the conditions under which they will be inspected. Do not invent a standard magnification or border allowance for every application.
Check the loss of usable area explicitly
For a hypothetical circular blank 50 mm in diameter, a 2 mm radial border reserved around the entire edge leaves a 46 mm diameter central zone. Its area is about 84.6% of the full disk area, calculated as (46/50) squared. This is a geometric example, not the fabric’s percentage open area or a prediction of flow loss.
The calculation helps the buyer distinguish three different quantities: blank size, exposed filtration zone and mesh open-area percentage. Confirm the frame opening and the finished edge together rather than treating these quantities as interchangeable.
Approve a sample in the intended assembly
Inspect dimensions and edge condition, then check how the part sits in its fixture. Record any curling, interference or loose material observed during the agreed handling exercise. If the process changes after approval, review whether the original sample still represents production.
The custom mesh disc drawing checklist covers the wider part definition. Use the sample-to-production approval guide to retain the approved drawing revision and evidence.
Send INCEFILTER your mesh part drawing and edge requirements, including material, aperture specification, assembly sketch, quantity and sample needs. Ask for written confirmation of the proposed method and any exceptions before production.
