Filter Mesh Exposed Area: Account for Clamps and Sealed Borders

The cut size of a mesh part is not necessarily the area exposed to liquid flow. A clamp, bonded border or frame can cover part of the fabric. For a custom filter, dimension the installed flow window as well as the outside dimensions before requesting a quotation.

This distinction helps buyers of INCEFILTER filter mesh compare proposed parts without confusing three quantities: total cut area, exposed fabric area and the openings within that exposed fabric.

Define the three areas on the drawing

  • Cut area: the full outline of the supplied mesh piece.
  • Exposed area: the fabric inside the unobstructed flow window after assembly.
  • Geometric open area: the sum of openings within the relevant fabric area, based on the specified weave.

For a uniform fabric with a confirmed open-area fraction, exposed area multiplied by that fraction provides a simple geometric estimate of the openings within the window. This is not a flow-capacity calculation. A support screen, several layers or a complex assembly may need a different assessment.

Work from the installed window, not the outer diameter

Consider a hypothetical circular mesh disc with a 100 mm outside diameter. If the assembly covers a 5 mm radial border all around, the exposed diameter is 90 mm. The exposed area is π × 90² ÷ 4, or approximately 6,362 mm². The full disc area is approximately 7,854 mm².

The exposed-to-total area ratio is 90² ÷ 100² = 0.81. Thus, 81% of the cut area remains inside the window. This follows from the example geometry; it is not a measured INCEFILTER part specification or a statement that flow falls by the same percentage.

If an illustrative fabric has a confirmed 40% open area, the openings within that window total approximately 2,545 mm² under the uniform-fabric assumption. Do not use this example percentage for a product order. Obtain the actual grade’s documented value and resolve conflicting figures before approval.

Identify what the calculation leaves out

Geometry alone does not establish pressure drop or throughput. Mesh construction and the liquid conditions still matter. A backing plate or support rib can obstruct additional regions; its effect cannot always be represented by multiplying unrelated catalogue percentages. Ask for the complete assembly to be reviewed.

For several mesh layers, do not add their open areas and call the result the available flow window. Their positions and combined flow resistance require consideration. Record the number of layers and support arrangement on the drawing.

Give the supplier an inspection dimension

State the outside size, required minimum flow-window dimensions, border location, assembly reference and applicable tolerances. Clarify whether the supplier delivers loose fabric, a cut part or a completed assembly. The party responsible for clamping or bonding must be able to verify the final window.

For round parts, combine this information with the custom mesh disc drawing checklist. Use the edge-finish approval guide to keep cut-edge requirements distinct from the usable window.

Send INCEFILTER your mesh assembly drawing, required aperture, liquid conditions, support details and quantity. Request confirmation of the proposed material and the dimensions that will be supplied and inspected.
